Age Group: Go Back to Bed, Samuel is a little game that’s quite popular with kids ages two to nine years of age.  Even the youngest children will enjoy and remember this game due to its repetitive nature.  Go Back to Bed, Samuel is also great game to use with multi-age groups.

Materials Needed: There are no materials needed for Go Back to Bed, Samuel.

First tell the children the story of the child, Samuel, from 1 Samuel, chapter 3.  Then have all the children lay down.  Explain that, when you say, “Samuel”, they will run up to you and say, “What is it?  You called me.”  The teacher will say, “I didn’t call you.  Go back to bed.”  The children will run back to their spot and lie down.  This sequence of events will happen three times.  Then the teacher will say, “God is calling you. When you hear your name,  say, ‘Speak Lord, your servant is listening.’”  Then the children will run back to their spots.  This time when they hear, “Samuel!”,  they will say, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening!”

Children really enjoy acting this story out.  If time permits a teacher may want to allow the children to act out twice the entire story of the calling of Samuel.
